Did you know that Kortright Animal Hospital provides quality preventative medicine for your ‘exotics’/small mammals? In fact, over 5% of our patients are itty bitty, and comprehensive physical examinations every six months are just as important for hedgehogs and rabbits etc as they are for our cats and dogs. Many of the small critters we consider to be exotic companion animals are natural prey species for predators in the wild and have evolved the ability to hide illness in order to avoid being on the menu. With this natural ability, it can be difficult for the untrained eye to detect disease. As a result, bringing your exotic pet to our hospital for routine, non-invasive visits such as weight checks, physical examinations, and behavioral and husbandry consultations may help reveal disease earlier and turn a situation that is potentially life threatening into one that is manageable.
Providing your small mammal with a nutritionally-balanced and fortified diet is one of the easiest and most important things one can do on a daily basis to support the health and wellbeing of your family pet. Here at Kortright Animal Hospital we are very nutrition focused and offer an array of high-quality hay, pellets, and treats that can be ordered and picked up at our hospital. We also provide our clients with nutritional counseling to ensure that your pet is staying on the straight and narrow. Carley, one of our excellent nurses, is our leading lady for nutritional advice to our patients of all sizes. She has over 10 years of experience working with companion exotic pets and offers a wealth of knowledge. In addition, Dr. Hunter attended a very unique conference, the Oxbow Exotic Companion Mammal Conference here at the Ontario Veterinary College, to stay current with research and the latest advancements in exotic health care and disease therapy.
