Kortright Animal Hospital and our healthcare team are proud advocates for the many feline patients we see every year. Dr. Tammy Hunter is a member of the American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP), which is a professional organization representing feline practitioners who are passionate about the care of cats. The AAFP is dedicated to advancing the field of feline medicine and surgery by setting the standards of feline care through the publication of practice guidelines, position statements, and by providing continuing education. Through her continuing education, Dr. Hunter has passed along her feline-friendly practices to the rest of the Kortright team. This includes a “no scruffing” policy. The act of scruffing a cat actually increases their level of fear and defensiveness and thus it is not an effective method of calming our feline friends. The team also minimizes loud noises and strange smells which can be scary to our feline patients. This includes having examination rooms and recovery suites separate from our canine patients. Our cat rooms are complete with cat trees, hidey-tents, perch’s and comfortable fleeces, beds, and Feliway diffusers. Feliway is a synthetic version of a natural feline calming pheromone that helps to reduce stress in cats. We have had great success with this product in the hospital and it is available for clients to purchase for cats that may be going through a stressful event such as moving, a new baby in the household and travelling.
If you are looking for a veterinary healthcare team that understands that cats are not small dogs and that they have their own unique set of behavioural, nutritional and health needs, Kortright Animal Hospital is the place to come!
